How It Works
Users can engage with ChatGPT in two primary ways:
Phone Calls: Available for users in the United States and Canada, the service provides 30 minutes of free conversation time per month. The phone-based interaction allows for natural voice conversations with ChatGPT.
WhatsApp Integration: Users can message ChatGPT directly through WhatsApp from supported countries. This integration includes several advanced features such as text messaging, image creation and editing, voice note support, and access to real-time web information.
Key Features and Limitations
The WhatsApp version offers a comprehensive set of capabilities including file uploads (primarily images), voice message processing, and web search functionality. However, personalization features like custom instructions and memory that are available in full ChatGPT accounts are not currently supported through this phone-based access.
Users can optionally link their existing ChatGPT accounts (Free, Plus, or Pro) to their WhatsApp number to access higher usage limits and additional features. Once linked, all WhatsApp conversations become part of the user's ChatGPT conversation history.

For optimal phone call experiences, OpenAI recommends using the service in quiet environments and utilizing noise isolation features. iPhone users can enable Voice Isolation mode to minimize interruptions, and headphones are suggested to improve call quality.
The service includes built-in safety measures and usage monitoring. Conversations are stored temporarily for safety and abuse prevention purposes, and standard carrier fees may apply for phone calls.
Data and Privacy Considerations
OpenAI retains call transcripts and WhatsApp messages for a limited time for safety purposes. Users who link their accounts will have their WhatsApp chat history integrated into their ChatGPT conversation records, subject to the same data controls as regular ChatGPT accounts.
